Getting Joburg Expat kicked off

Yippee! After 5 weeks in Africa, I now have an internet connection, a car, and a cell phone. The blogging can now begin! I will backdate my first few entries to cover the time lag.

March 3, 2010:

Our South African adventure begins. We are waiting for our departure from Washington Dulles airport. The day is gray and the promise of better weather great.

Our family - or parts thereof - has lived in Germany, Singapore, and the United States, so Africa is our fourth continent. While we're waiting, let me introduce us, since you'll invariably encounter everyone on this blog:

1) my dear husband, whom I will call Noisette, for his passion for the Milka chocolate bar of that name; 2) myself; 3) our oldest and newly teenage son Zax, who doesn’t like to budge, just like in “The Prairie of Prax” by Dr. Seuss; 4) his younger brother Felix, who is almost always happy; 5) our third child and first girl, Impatience, who can never wait for anything; and 6) the youngest, 7-year old Sunshine, whose smile brightens most anyone’s day.

I will also try putting into words what Joburg Expat is going to be about. Officially, it will contain "valuable information and entertaining stories about the life of an American expat in Johannesburg, South Africa; includes info on South African schools, travel, language, government, sports, and life in general" but I admit that this is more a search engine teaser than something I'd actually write. I think Joburg Expat will primarily be a diary about our time here, with an attempt to be useful to others as well.
